Jen’s 50-Pound Weight Loss Journey and How She Did It

Every so often a story appears that proves the journey to health is about much more than a number on the scale. Jen’s story is one of perseverance, growth, and lasting change. As a busy mom of four, she has faced difficult seasons and learned to transform not only her body, but her mindset around food and fitness. After trying countless diets, Jen found a sustainable solution in macro counting. That approach helped her lose more than 50 pounds and reshaped her relationship with food, exercise, and herself. Her experience is a reminder that meaningful change is possible at any stage of life.

Tell us a little bit about your story. Work? Family?

Jen: I’m a mom of four (18, 11, 9, 7), married for 12.5 years, and a Child of God. I became a mom as a teen, and life has included ups and downs—my parents’ divorce, different parenting styles, difficult choices as a teen, an abusive relationship—but God met me and led me forward. I married my husband, who’s been a loving and present father to my son and a wonderful dad to our daughters. We’re Latinos from Chicago and moved to northwest Indiana five years ago. I’m mostly a stay-at-home mom and occasionally work as a substitute teacher. I love spending time with friends and family from church, I enjoy 90s music—especially salsa and reggaeton—and I love to dance.

How did you find Stay Fit Mom and what made you decide to take the leap?

Jen: My brother-in-law has tracked macros for about a decade, which always made me curious. Coach Chelsea, a close friend from church, explained the importance of protein and emphasized sustainability over fad dieting. Learning to eat more balanced meals and prioritize protein convinced me to give macro counting a real try.

Your transformation is inspiring! Tell us how much weight and inches you’ve lost.

Jen: I’ve lost 50 pounds since July 10, 2025—going from 202 to 152 pounds. I’ve lost about 23.5 inches total: 10.5 inches from my waist and roughly 5–6 inches from my bust. I dropped a cup size and moved from a size 14 to mainly a size 6 (sometimes an 8 for non-stretch jeans), going from L/XL down to S or M.

What diets have you tried before, and how does macro counting compare?

Jen: I’ve tried almost everything—the egg diet, cabbage diet, Atkins, strict calorie counting, carnivore, short juice cleanses, and extreme low-calorie phases paired with intense workouts. While those methods made me lose weight temporarily, they were unsustainable. I often felt starved, lost muscle, and never learned how to properly fuel my body. Macro counting changed that: it helped me support muscle growth while burning fat, allowed me to enjoy my favorite foods with smarter choices, and taught me how to make sustainable substitutions. If I slip for a day or two, I get back on track without guilt.

How do you fit macro counting into your lifestyle? Any major changes?

Jen: I still eat many of the same foods, but I choose leaner versions more often and pay attention to portions. The biggest change was stopping habitual overeating—no more nightly bags of chips or half-liters of soda, and fewer impulse restaurant visits tied to coupons or rewards. Counting macros lets me prepare family meals I enjoy while staying aligned with my goals. Often it’s small swaps—reduced-fat options, leaner proteins, or lower-carb choices—rather than drastic changes.

How has macro counting shifted your view of dieting?

Jen: Early on I tried to return to restrictive dieting and quickly realized I couldn’t—those diets left me hungry and depleted. Macro counting taught me how to eat satisfying, balanced meals that support fat loss and muscle maintenance. Once I experienced eating enough food while still progressing, I couldn’t go back to extreme dieting.

Besides weight loss, what non-scale victories have you experienced?

Jen: The biggest win has been the mental shift. I used to wake up with constant “food noise,” and now that chatter has quieted. I’ve gained stamina and fallen in love with the gym—working out is now one of my favorite activities. I’ve noticed new muscle in my arms and shoulders that I never had before, and I’ve been able to donate larger clothing and build a new wardrobe. Best of all, my kids are proud of me. These victories go far beyond the scale.

What’s your favorite Stay Fit Mom recipe?

Jen: My favorites are Dump Lasagna and Buffalo Mac n Cheese.
