When I first saw the Brownie Pie recipe in Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Table Cookbook I was skeptical — and curious. Putting a fudgy brownie filling into a flaky pie crust sounded unusual, but it turned out to be a brilliant idea: the pie crust becomes the perfect vehicle for rich brownies.

I loved the contrast between the sweet, fudgy brownie center and the salty, flaky pastry. I used the homemade pie crust from the cookbook — it’s quick to make and worth the extra effort. The flavor is far better than a store-bought crust. While the pie is wonderful with a light dusting of powdered sugar, it definitely begs for a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

This dessert is great for special occasions and backyard barbecues. It isn’t something I’d make every week, but it’s easy enough to pull together on a whim with minimal, pantry-friendly ingredients. I don’t have any special pro tips — the recipe came together beautifully and the flavor was spot on. I especially enjoyed the nuts in the filling. One tip worth noting: because the filling is very dark, it can overcook quickly. Watch the pie closely near the end of the bake time so it stays moist and fudgy rather than drying out.

If you make this, tell me how it turns out and if you change anything for your next batch.
Until next time, happy cooking!
