I recently attended a pop-up dinner where strangers gathered to share a home-cooked meal. It felt a little unusual at first, but the evening turned out to be warm and memorable. The host was a talented cook named Sherrie, and I went with my friend Erin.

Pop-up dinners are a great way for home cooks to test restaurant-style menus in an intimate setting. In this case the theme celebrated spring berries and mostly vegan, gluten-free dishes. We began with a strawberry shrub and ended the meal with coconut panna cotta topped with salt-and-pepper strawberries. Everything was delicious.

Sherrie sent guests home with an abundance of berries, and I’ve been using them in recipes ever since. I’ve made pies, fizzy cocktails and more — any excuse to add berries works for me.

The inspiration for frozen blackberry limeade:

When some of the berries started to soften, I tossed them into the blender with ice, lime juice and a touch of raw sugar and made a slushy. It reminded me of other frozen drinks I’ve made but felt even more refreshing since it worked for daytime sipping.

The evening setting was cozy and inviting. As the sun set I snapped a few photos before putting my phone away to enjoy the company and the food without distractions. The menu included strawberry-chamomile shrubs, toast with goat cheese and pea shoots, a roasted vegetable risotto topped with a fried egg, vegan coconut panna cotta, and a post-dessert tea cocktail with Amaro.

That night left me inspired, and the extra berries led directly to a series of frozen lemonades and limeades, blackberry versions among them. This frozen blackberry limeade is one of my favorites—simple, fruity and perfectly chilled. My daughter loves blackberries, so this will be a treat for her when she’s ready for frozen drinks.
