5-Minute Homemade Lunchables: Quick DIY Kids’ Snack Packs

These 5-minute homemade lunchables are quick to assemble and perfect for kids of all ages. More flavorful and wholesome than the prepackaged versions, you can customize each box to your child’s tastes so lunchtime becomes something they look forward to.

Making your own lunchables is a great opportunity to get creative and involve your child in packing their meal. It’s an easy way to offer a healthier, fresher alternative to school lunch or store-bought kits.

While simple gluten-free sandwiches are a staple in many homes, variety helps keep kids interested. These homemade lunchables let you change up the flavors and textures almost every day.

Store-bought lunch kits are convenient, but their ingredient lists can be long and full of additives. Preparing these at home lets you control what goes in the box and ensures everything is something your child actually likes.

I also like tucking in a small treat—like a chocolate chip cookie—as a fun surprise.

Why you’ll love DIY lunchables

  • Fully customizable for dietary preferences and restrictions
  • Suitable for kids of all ages
  • Easy to involve your child in preparation
  • Prep ahead and store in the fridge for grab-and-go mornings or weekend outings

What you need

These are my go-to components, but feel free to swap in what your family prefers.

  • Cheese – Sliced cheese, string cheese, or your favorite variety.
  • Turkey – Sliced deli turkey (or ham, chicken, salami). A good protein source for kids.
  • Crackers – Any crackers your child enjoys: gluten-free crackers, Ritz, saltines, etc.
  • Fresh fruit – Grapes, orange segments, apple slices, strawberries, or berries.
  • Treat – A small cookie, mini brownie, or a couple of sandwich cookies as a pick-me-up.
  • Drink – A water bottle or small juice box on the side.

How to make your own lunchables

Step 1: Cut the cheese

Slice the cheese and deli meat to match your crackers. Use a knife for squares or a small cookie cutter for fun shapes that fit round crackers.

Step 2: Arrange

Place the cheese, turkey, crackers, fruit, and any extras neatly in a divided lunchbox or bento. Keep perishable items chilled with an ice pack if needed.

Is it cheaper to make your own lunchables?

Yes. Making lunchables at home is generally more economical than buying the prepackaged kits. You likely already have most ingredients on hand, making it quick and budget-friendly to assemble a balanced lunch.

What else can you add?

Small touches make a big difference—use a mini cookie cutter to shape cucumbers or carrots into flowers to make veggies more appealing. Other additions to consider:

  • Applesauce pouch
  • Different cheeses (cheddar, pepper jack, mozzarella)
  • Salami or pepperoni
  • Small packets of mayo or mustard
  • Peanut butter and jelly sandwich pieces
  • Pita or mini flatbread
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Hard-boiled egg

What to pack your lunchable in

Any divided container works well—bento boxes, meal prep containers, or a PlanetBox style lunchbox. Choose what fits your routine and the items you plan to include.

How long will a lunchable stay good?

Prepared lunchboxes can be stored in the fridge for 1–2 days. When taking them out, use an ice pack or avoid leaving the lunch at room temperature for more than 4–5 hours to keep perishable items safe.

Other bento ideas

Try themed lunches for special occasions: a pizza grilled cheese monster, mini pizzas with pita and sauce, or playful sandwiches like spider sandwiches with pretzel legs. These fun ideas encourage kids to eat and enjoy their lunch.

This pizza grilled cheese monster is going to be any kids favorite lunchbox sandwich! They are going to love the whimsy and fun of opening this up in the lunchroom to a funny face. We love using Canyon Bakehouse bread because it is so tasty that nobody would ever know it is gluten-free. AD

Seasonal sandwiches like spider sandwiches or other spooky-themed options are great for Halloween or themed school days. Simple decorations and a little creativity go a long way.
