Back To School Organize to Optimize – Bedroom Clutter

Day One

Day One focuses on clearing bedroom clutter. For many families this is the toughest step. Children often form attachments to their belongings, but having too many items creates visual chaos and added stress—for kids and parents alike. A calmer, more organized bedroom makes mornings easier and helps everyone feel more prepared for the school day.

Here is your task:

  • Optional: Take a “before” photo. It’s motivating to see the difference and gives you a quick win to celebrate later.
  • Gather supplies: a trash bag, a couple of storage boxes, a donation box, and a clutter box. The clutter box holds items that belong elsewhere in the home.
  • Discard trash immediately. As you sort, toss broken or unusable items and set aside what can be stored or donated.
  • Store non-essential belongings. Put away toys, seasonal items, or anything not used daily to reduce visual clutter and speed up daily tidying.

You may need more than two storage boxes—especially for toys and games. Make a simple plan for access: let children know they can retrieve a few items on weekends, or follow a rotation so they still enjoy favorites without keeping everything out all the time. Often kids don’t miss many items once they get used to a leaner space.

One practical approach is to limit play items to a manageable number—for example, 15 small toys or figures, three favorite board games, and limited video game time on weekends only. Adapt this to your family’s needs and values.

Our goal is a child’s room that can be tidied in five minutes or less. This simple benchmark keeps maintenance realistic and reduces daily stress for everyone.

  • Put stored items out of sight—use closet shelves, under-bed bins, or labeled boxes.
  • Remove trash and place donations in your car so you can drop them off soon.
  • Take an after photo and celebrate your progress—Day One is complete.

A decluttered bedroom creates a calmer environment that supports better focus, sleep, and routines—key ingredients for a successful school year. Spending a little time now saves many moments later.

Question: How much stuff does your child really need? Do extra toys create stress or comfort in your home—or does “the more, the merrier” apply? Reflect on what works best for your family and use that to guide limits and storage choices.
