Homemade Chocolate Kisses: Simple Recipe for Melt-in-Your-Mouth Treats

These DIY Chocolate Kisses are surprisingly fun to make, share, and enjoy. They’re allergen-friendly and easily customized for any person, event, or holiday. Because they’re versatile and simple, I reach for this recipe often when I want homemade treats that look like store-bought Hershey Kisses but cater to dietary needs.

DIY Chocolate Kiss recipe notes

  • The most important tool is a chocolate chip (kiss) mold sized like Hershey Kisses. I use silicone molds that match store-bought dimensions — they release easily and are simple to clean.
  • Mini squeeze bottles make filling the molds clean and efficient. I use mine weekly and consider them essential kitchen gadgets for this process.
  • Keep 1–2 toothpicks handy. You’ll need them to eliminate air pockets and ensure a clean tip on each kiss.
  • Use a 9–10 oz bag of dairy-free chocolate morsels. I usually choose Enjoy Life semi-sweet, but dark or white allergy-friendly morsels work well too. Buying in bulk saves money if you plan to make these often.
  • To achieve the classic Hershey Kiss presentation, have aluminum foil and thin white paper strips ready for wrapping.

A crucial step is pushing a toothpick into the tip of each cavity after filling. This forces melted chocolate into the very point of the kiss and releases trapped air. Skipping this step can lead to flat tips or air bubbles — something I learned the hard way on my first batch.

When I skipped the toothpick step, many kisses missed that perfect tip and showed air pockets. Now I always poke the tip to ensure a smooth, peaked finish.

I initially bought these molds to make chocolate kiss cookies, but they quickly proved useful for many other projects and occasions. Once you have the molds, you’ll find plenty of ways to use them beyond cookies.

Instructions

  • Melt chocolate morsels over low heat on the stove or soften in short bursts in the microwave, stirring frequently.
  • Pour the melted chocolate into a mini squeeze bottle for controlled filling.
  • Fill each kiss cavity with chocolate and gently tap the tray on a hard surface to level and remove large air pockets.
  • Use a toothpick to push chocolate into the tip of each cavity and release any remaining air bubbles.
  • Allow the kisses to cool at room temperature until set. If you need them quickly, chill in the refrigerator until firm.
  • When the chocolate is hardened, pop the kisses from the mold and store them in an airtight container for a few days. They may show slight discoloration from humidity after several days but will remain tasty.
