Air Fryer Monte Cristo sandwiches combine the best elements of a grilled ham and cheese and French toast, finished with a touch of raspberry jelly. They balance salty and sweet, and using the air fryer gives them a perfectly crisp exterior with melty cheese inside.
If you love sandwiches—or are simply hungry—this easy air fryer recipe is worth trying. It’s not an ordinary sandwich, and once you make it you might find yourself craving it again and again.

Since I started using my Cosori air fryer, I make sandwiches in it almost exclusively. It’s fast, cleanup is minimal, and it’s simple enough that my kids and husband can make them too. Ham sandwiches are a family favorite—this Monte Cristo joins other popular recipes like ham and cheese pinwheels and a ham and cheese crescent ring.
I love a Monte Cristo and will order one whenever I can. This version is inspired by Disneyland’s Blue Bayou and Café Orleans. Monte Cristos work anytime—breakfast, brunch, or even breakfast-for-dinner.

What is a Monte Cristo?
The Monte Cristo is an American variation of the French Croque-Monsieur. Traditionally it’s a ham-and-cheese sandwich dipped in a batter like French toast and then cooked. Over time it became popular in theme parks and diners, where it’s often served with jam or preserves on the side. Don’t skip the jam—raspberry preserves are classic, though other fruit jams can be fun for a different twist.

Ingredients to Make Monte Cristo Sandwiches
- 1 1/2 cups pancake mix
- 1/2 cup whole or 2% milk
- 1/4 cup water

- 1 egg
- 8 slices Texas toast (or other thick-sliced bread)
- 16 slices Swiss cheese (or Gruyère if preferred)
- 20 slices deli ham (thin sliced)
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar

How to Make an Air Fryer Monte Cristo

1. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together pancake mix, water, milk, vanilla, and egg until combined. The batter should be thick; add a bit more pancake mix if needed to reach the right consistency.
2. Preheat the air fryer to 370°F (188°C). If you use parchment liners, wait to place them in the basket until the sandwiches are ready to go in.
3. Assemble each sandwich: layer one slice of bread, two slices of cheese, five slices of ham, two more slices of cheese, and finish with another slice of bread. Secure the corners with toothpicks so the sandwich holds together.
4. Dip a sandwich into the batter and carefully turn to coat both sides. Tongs work well for this step to keep the sandwich intact.
5. Line the air fryer basket with a parchment liner if desired, and place battered sandwiches in the basket in a single layer without touching. You may need to cook in batches depending on your air fryer size.
6. Air fry at 370°F for 10 minutes total. Flip the sandwiches after 7 minutes, then cook the remaining 3 minutes.
7. Remove the sandwiches, let them rest 1–2 minutes, remove toothpicks, dust with powdered sugar, and serve with raspberry jelly for dipping.

What is the best bread to use?
Thick bread works best for Monte Cristos because it soaks up the batter without falling apart. Texas toast is ideal, but you can also use thick-cut French or Italian loaf slices. Regular white bread will work in a pinch, but a sturdier slice yields better results.
Tips for Making Monte Cristo in the Air Fryer
- Add sliced turkey or more deli meat for a heartier sandwich.
- Spread a thin layer of jam inside before cooking if you like it sweeter.
- Swap Gruyère for Swiss cheese for a nuttier flavor.
- Drizzle with maple syrup after cooking for extra sweetness.
Pair your Monte Cristo with simple sides like fruit, a green salad, or air fryer potatoes for a complete meal.
How to Reheat a Monte Cristo Sandwich
Monte Cristos are best eaten fresh. To reheat, warm them in the air fryer at 350°F for a few minutes or place on a baking sheet in a preheated oven until heated through. Avoid reheating in the microwave, which can make the battered exterior soggy.

Are Monte Cristo Sandwiches Healthy?
These sandwiches are an indulgence—higher in calories, fat, and carbs—so they’re best enjoyed occasionally. If you want to lighten them up, try whole wheat bread, reduce the cheese, or enjoy a half sandwich with fruit or a salad. Cooking in the air fryer is a healthier alternative to deep-frying.
- Swap whole wheat bread for Texas toast.
- Use less cheese.
- Cook in the air fryer instead of deep-frying.
- Eat half a sandwich with a side of fruit or greens.
What Should I Serve With Monte Cristos?
- Air fryer homemade potato chips
- Air fryer tater tots
- Fresh fruit salad
- Creamy fruit salad or a light green salad
- Diced air fryer potatoes
