Directions for Easter Surprise Eggs

1. In a small bowl, mix equal parts white glue and water until smooth. This thinned glue will help the yarn adhere and dry clear.

2. Cut long strands of yarn and lay them in the glue mixture so they soak through. Work with one or two lengths at a time so they’re easy to handle.

3. Inflate a small balloon to the egg size you want. Keep in mind that larger eggs make it easier to insert treats, so aim for at least a fist-sized balloon.

4. Remove a soaked strand of yarn from the glue, gently squeeze or run it between your fingers to remove excess glue, then begin wrapping. Start at the top of the balloon and wrap the yarn around in different directions—top to bottom, side to side—until you have a pleasing, open lattice that still looks like an egg.

5. Leave a wider opening at the bottom of the balloon for later filling. This unwrapped area will allow you to insert grass and treats once the yarn hardens.

6. Hang the wrapped balloons by their knots with clothespins or place them on a drying rack so air can circulate. Allow them to dry completely overnight; drying time may vary depending on humidity and how saturated the yarn is.

7. When fully dry and stiff, carefully pop the balloon with a pin and remove it from the yarn shell. If the yarn shell shrinks slightly as the balloon deflates, gently tease the yarn back into shape.

8. Stretch the bottom opening a bit more if needed and tuck in Easter grass or shredded paper, then add your chosen treats. Close the opening by pulling the yarn strands back into place; guests can later pull the yarn apart to reveal the surprise inside.

The finished eggs are lightweight, decorative, and fun to open. They work well as party favors, table accents, or an interactive element during an Easter meal.

Ingredients

  • Yarn
  • 1 bottle Elmer’s Glue
  • Scissors
  • Clothespins
  • 6 small Balloons

Instructions

  • Create a mixture of half glue and half water in a small bowl. Cut long strings of yarn and soak them in the bowl of glue.
  • Blow the balloon up to the size you want the egg shape. The smaller the balloon, the harder it is to fit treats in, so aim for at least fist size.
  • Pull one piece of glue-soaked yarn out at a time, using your fingers to remove excess glue.
  • Wrap the yarn around the balloon from top to bottom and side to side until the balloon has a nice egg shape.
  • Leave a larger gap at the bottom so you can fill the egg later. Once the yarn is dry, you can adjust the shape slightly if needed.
  • Pop the balloon the next day to remove it. If the yarn shell shifts as the balloon deflates, gently reshape it.
  • Stretch the gap at the bottom to add Easter grass and candy, then pull the yarn back to close it so guests can open the surprise.
